A UML Use Case Diagram is a visual representation of a system's actors and the system's use cases. A use case represents a function or group of functions, from the point of view of an actor. Actors are external entities that interact with the system being modeled using the provided functionality. They can be human users, other hardware devices, or software systems. Use cases are represented as ellipses. They can be linked with dashed lines to show the actor using them (and which actor initiated the use case). The basic notation used for UML is purposefully simple, using only the most elementary graphical elements that will not be confused with other types of diagrams frequently used in practice.
