Sending Christmas cards has been a worldwide tradition for over 150 years. British businessman Sir Henry Cole made the first Christmas card in 1843. He is also credited with developing the first commercial Christmas card. He was inspired to create the Christmas card after seeing a painting of people sending New Year's cards. He thought it would be a superb concept to make a card sent at Christmas time. He teamed up with John Callcott Horsley, who designed the card. The card showed three generations of people sitting around a table with the message, "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You." Before, only wealthy friends and family members received Christmas cards. It wasn't until the 1860s that Christmas cards became more popular as these were finally sold to the general public.
